When you come in and see us, and have a cavity, this is what you should expect. First, we will clean out the cavity to ensure that only healthy tooth remains. Second, we will create a filling likely from composite material to provide synthetic, but functional tooth structure where your cavity was removed.

What to Expect

You will be in Kelly Smile Victorville office for approximately an hour as we perform the filling procedure. This allows enough time for our staff to take X-rays if necessary, discuss the procedure with you and complete the work. We will numb your teeth, gums and the skin in the surrounding area to reduce discomfort during the procedure. Next, we will drill out the decay and replace the empty space with a filling. The procedure itself will only take a few minutes.

Post-Procedure Care

Since your mouth will be numb for a few hours after the filling procedure, it’s important to chew carefully to avoid biting your lip or tongue. You can eat as usual soon after getting a filling, but soft foods are recommended at first to avoid as much chewing as possible. Although fillings come with minimal risk of complications, be sure to keep our number handy if any issues arise.

Types of Dental Fillings

We use composite fillings in most cases, but there are other types of fillings that may be more appropriate for your situation. These include amalgam, ceramic, metal and glass lonomer. Each type of filling has its pros and cons, depending on the kind of treatment needed.

Amalgam

Amalgam fillings have been around for over a century, making a highly researched material. This type of filling is very strong and is often used for fillings in the back of the mouth.

Ceramic

Usually, a ceramic filling is made from porcelain and matches the color of your teeth well. It is highly resistant to staining compared to a composite filling, but ceramic fillings are significantly more costly compared to other materials used for fillings.

Getting a filling is a relatively quick procedure that causes most patients little discomfort. There’s no need to wait to replace tooth decay with a filling, with such a simple procedure available. For all your dental care needs, don’t hesitate to contact our office to schedule an exam.
