How Does Lupus Affect Your Oral Health?Lupus is a disease that affects the body in many ways. It is an autoimmune condition. It can cause problems with the joints, kidneys, the digestive system and the heart.

It can cause hair loss and other problems for anyone that suffers from it. It can also affect your oral health. It is not only Lupus that affects oral health, but also the medicines used to treat lupus.

Impact of the Disease

Lupus does not directly affect the teeth, but the problems with lupus often occur in combination with teeth problems. Lupus can cause mouth ulcers. The ulcers occur on the lips, cheeks and the roof of the mouth.

They can make it difficult for a person to give their teeth the care they need to stay healthy and may explain why problems with the teeth happen more often to a person with active lupus.

Some people who have lupus also develop another autoimmune disorder known as Sjogren's Syndrome. This condition affects the salivary glands. There is less saliva produced and that can lead to more cavities.

Impact of Medications

It is important for people to turn to medications to help them with Lupus, but some of the medications people use can hurt the oral health. Corticosteroids are a common medicine to treat Lupus, but a side effect of this drug and other drugs to treat Lupus is dry mouth. That dryness can affect the health of the teeth and gums.

If you or someone else you know has Lupus, they need to know of the connection between Lupus and their oral health. They need to make sure they pay more attention to the care of their teeth, mouth and gums as well as seek the help of our dental professionals.
